Energy saving obligation: what is it?

The Dutch energy saving obligation requires organisations with high energy use to take measures that pay for themselves within five years.

In the Netherlands, companies and institutions that use more than 50,000 kWh of electricity or 25,000 cubic metres of natural gas (or a comparable amount of other fuel) per year have an energy saving obligation. They must take energy saving measures that pay for themselves within five years.

Every four years they must report which measures they have taken. This is called the information obligation. Smart meters and a building management system make visible what has been done and what it delivers.
