Two labels, one building
IT-Label and energy label: two sides of the same building.
The energy label tells you how efficient a building is. The IT-Label tells you whether it is digitally ready to become even more efficient. Together they give an honest picture of how future-proof a building is.
01. Side by side
The difference at a glance.
| Energy label | IT-Label | |
|---|---|---|
| What is it about? | The calculated energy use of the building | The digital infrastructure and smart building systems |
| Scale | A++++ to G | IT1+ to IT5 |
| Who assesses it? | A certified EP adviser | A certified IT-Label partner |
| Method | NTA 8800, a calculation | Audit and on-site measurements |
| Mandatory? | Yes, when selling, letting or completing a building | No, voluntary |
| Valid | 10 years | 2 years |
02. How they connect
Smart control needs a good foundation.
The biggest savings in a commercial building are often in the controls. Heating and cooling based on occupancy. Lights that switch off when nobody is there. Ventilation based on measured CO2. For that, sensors, meters and installations need to talk to each other.
That happens over the network. If the network is unreliable, or the systems work in isolation, the savings stay out of reach. The IT-Label shows whether the foundation is there.
- Better control can contribute to a better energy label
- Smart meters show actual consumption
- A good foundation makes later steps cheaper
Frequently asked questions
Questions about both labels.
Will smart systems give me a better energy label?
They can. The energy label calculation takes into account building automation and the way installations are controlled. How much it helps differs per building. An energy performance (EP) adviser can calculate this for you. We make sure the digital foundation for those systems is right.
Does my office need label C?
In the Netherlands, office buildings have had to meet at least energy label C since 1 January 2023. There are exceptions, for example for small offices and listed buildings. For the exact rules, see the website of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
What does smart metering add if my label is already good?
The energy label is a calculation. Actual consumption can be very different. With smart meters you see what your building really uses, and where you can still save. Investors and banks also increasingly ask for that actual consumption.
